A Brief History

ASUCA has a long , volatile history and is more than 85 years. The establishing date of University refers to the second decade of the XX th century. On 25th of October, 1922 the board of National Commissariat of Education discussed the suggestion of Shovkat Mammadova and decided to found Theatre School. And it was based on a model of Moscow Theatre School. The foundation of Theatre school at those days was the crucial provision of this project.
It was unique school and had no analogy. On the 1st of November, 1922 the Baku State Turkish School with Sh. Mammadova as the director and A.K. Sharifov as an assistant director was founded.
The great dramatist J.Jabbarly welcomed the establishment of Baku Turkish theater school and in 1925 (on April and May) he wrote articles for newspaper “Communist” dedicated to that event.
In 1923 the admission of students to the actor faculty was taken place. From 40 students who entered the school 12 were Azerbaijani girls. This fact considered to be a success.
The announcement of the foundation of the Drama Institute in 1945 was thus the revelation and manifestation of artistic prosperity in Azerbaijan. It was the only national institution dedicate exclusively to preparing talented young artists.
In the history of arts education in Azerbaijan, ASUCA occupies a special place. It is unique in its broad disciplinary scope and in its character.
