The Faculty of Music, one of the leading faculties of the university, was established on August 25, 2001. It’s been a long way until it finally became an independent faculty. The foundation of music education was laid during this process.
While it was still a technical school, great attention was paid to the teaching of music subjects in the curriculum in order to train actors, directors and theater scholars with comprehensive creative abilities, and the subjects such as History of Music" and "Music in the Theater" were taught there.
1962 was a significant year in the history of the institute. A new course of Acting in Musical Comedy was added to the list of newly opened majors and a new stage began in the development of musical education. The range of subjects increased and education was enriched with classes including Music Theory, Solfeggio, Piano, Vocal Studies and Vocal Ensemble. This meant that music subjects are taught here at a professional level. Since then, graduates of the institute have had the opportunity to continue their activities as specialists in the opera theater, state choir chapel.
The department of "Musical subjects" has been established in 1967. The department's leadership was assigned to the talented pianist, art studies candidate Gulara Aliyeva.
Prominent Azerbaijani conductor, People's Artist of the USSR, State Prize laureate Niyazi, folk artists, composers - Haji Khanmammadov, Shafiga Akhundova, singers - Rahila Jabbarova, Gulu Asgarov, Lutfuyar Imanov, Milovanov, musicologists - Danil Danilov, Naila Karimova and others raised a large generation of professionals in the field of culture.
Many well-known musicians of Azerbaijan are graduates of this university. Prominent singers-folk artists Islam Rzayev, Janali Akbarov, Arif Babayev, Alim Gasimov, Sakina Ismayilova, Malakkhanim Eyubova, singers - Zumrud Mammadova, Aghadadash Agayev, Azer Zeynalov, composer Vagif Gerayzade, pop singers - Brilyant Dadashova, Faig Agayev, Zulfiya Khanbabaeva and others studied at this educational institution.
As a result of serious reforms carried out in the university since 1987, many new specialties were added - "Instrumental performance", “Pop Art”, "Mugam" and for the first time in a higher educational institution “Ashug Art”.
The emergence of new specialties already indicated that the university has a highly qualified teaching potential and has acquired great experience in the field of music education. The Faculty of Music was established in 2001. Department of “Ashug Art” has been operating since 2011.
Great attention is also paid to the development of international relations in the "Music" faculty. In this sense, the steps taken by the teachers of the faculty to represent national musicology science and music in foreign countries should be especially noted. Foreign musicologists are constantly invited to give seminars and master classes.
